Jaxson Hayes is an American basketball player playing in the NBA at the pivot position. He was born on May 23, 2000 in Norman, Oklahoma (USA). His height is 2m13, and he plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Origins

Jaxson Hayes is the son of Jonathan Hayes and Kristi Kinne. His father played in the NFL and was head coach of the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks. His mother played basketball at Drake University. She was also an assistant coach for the women’s basketball teams at Oklahoma, Iowa and Southern Illinois-Carbondale. Jaxson Hayes has three siblings: Jillian, Jewett and Jonah.

High school

Jaxson Hayes started out at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew impressively from 1.8m as a freshman to 2.11m as a senior. In 2018, he led Team Ohio to victory at the Junior International Tournament in Italy. As a senior, he averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists per game before committing to the University of Texas.

NCAA

At Texas, Hayes impressed in his first year, averaging 10 points and 5 rebounds, while shooting 72.8% from the field. Named Big 12 Freshman of the Year, he declared his candidacy for the 2019 NBA draft, giving up three years of remaining eligibility.

NBA

Drafted eighth overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2019, his rights were traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. Hayes made his NBA debut with 19 points against the Golden State Warriors. He quickly proved his potential, recording some remarkable performances, including several double-doubles. His 2020-2021 season was marked by high scoring despite reduced early playing time.


After being briefly assigned to the G League, Hayes returned with a vengeance, playing a key role in the Pelicans’ qualification for the 2022 playoffs. Despite an ejection in Game 3 against the Phoenix Suns, he contributed to the Pelicans’ first playoff appearance since 2018. On July 6, 2023, Hayes joined the Los Angeles Lakers.
